Q&A with Roman Coppola

3:38 AM

10pm: I was lying in bed armed with tea, wet hair in a towel and my laptop open to Netflix, when suddenly my friend texted me with some pretty amazing news. He said that Roman Coppola would be doing a Skype Q&A session at the Rio Theatre, after a screening of A Glimpse Inside the Mind of Charles Swan III (2012), which he had directed. Naturally I could never pass up an opportunity to interact (albeit digitally) with a member of the Coppola family, so I hauled ass to get ready and down to the theatre just in time for the Q&A. On a side note, I'm so happy this was able to be hosted at the Rio Theatre here in Vancouver, which attracts such passionate filmgoers. While I missed the screening of the film, I'm thrilled that I got the chance to hear from one of the minds who helped create such films as Moonrise Kingdom (2012), Somewhere (2010), Lost in Translation (2003), The Darjeeling Limited (2007) etc. It was such an inspiring session to be a part of -  topics of discussion included  collaborations with Wes Anderson, artistic integrity as an independent filmmaker, shenanigans on the set of Apocalypse Now (1979), even what Mr. Coppola will be wearing to the Academy Awards this Sunday, where he is nominated alongside Wes Anderson for Best Writing for Moonrise Kingdom. What a wonderfully rewarding impromptu experience!
