Django Unchained Inspired Tribute to Brian De Palma's The Untouchables

Those who know me very well will likely know that my favourite film from the age of 13 to 17 was Brian de Palma's mob flick, The Untouchables (1987). Seems like a weird fact to know about someone, but I'm tellin' ya, I told anybody who would listen to me about just how AMAZING this movie was. However, countless views over the years, along with the introduction of new favourites left me disenchanted with this once beloved movie. That is until I rewatched The Untouchables for the first time in years a few weeks ago. Sean Connery won a Best Supporting Actor Oscar for his role as beat cop Jimmy Malone, a puzzle to me then, and a puzzle to me now. Though arguably the last film of his capable of meriting an Oscar (unfortunately I don't think the academy would take his Last Crusade role quite as seriously), Connery is just a tad ridiculous as he huffs in his never changing Scottish accent that he is a "poor Irish beat cop". To this day I consider that Oscar of his an honourary Oscar because...why? He has some solid moments though, as does the rest of the cast. I'm a fan on Andy Garcia in particular as the young police recruit added to the team who would take down Capone. There's a moment in the famous Chicago's Union Station scene where Garcia slides underneath the baby carriage which had been trepidatiously falling down the station's stairs. I think my 13-year old heart died the day I first witnessed that moment. Anyway all this to say that looking back on what used to be my most treasure film, I can see its corniness, its glaring faults, and everything in between. But you know what? I still fucking love this movie. It's action packed, and dramatic and gorgeous to look at. So a little while ago I felt inspired to do something...anything(!) to pay tribute to this film that was one of the first ever to capture my love of movies. Repeat listenings of the Django Unchained soundtrack lead me to create this short little edit, which pairs the song "Unchained", a mashup of James Brown's "The Payback" and 2Pac's "Untouchable", with some of my favourite moments from The Untouchables. Enjoy.
